Donald Trump's Feelings are Hurt: No More Briefings?

Donald Trump has not reacted well to the massive mocking he has been subjected to by mainstream and social media as a result of his idiotic comments about investigating whether injecting bleach into humans might be the cure for the coronavirus.

First, he said he was being sarcastic. The Guardian explains how ridiculous that defense is. Here is the clip of the original comments. Here is the clip of his "sarcastic" defense.

Meanwhile, his press secretary contadicts him, claiming in a press release that the brouhaha is the result of the media taking his comments out of context. [More....]

Now Trump says there's no point to giving press updates:

“What is the purpose of having White House News Conferences when the Lamestream Media asks nothing but hostile questions, & then refuses to report the truth or facts accurately,” he wrote. “They get record ratings, & the American people get nothing but Fake News. Not worth the time & effort!”

There was never any point. The conferences were the idea of his campaign team, who assumed they would boost his ratings. After weeks of being the target of media criticism because he gives out false information, the bleach comments were the final straw in the eyes of his camaign team. They finally advised him to stop holding the conferences because they are decidedly hurting, not helping his reelection effort.

It would all be just another media disaster, except some people took him seriously and tried it -- and the idea for his comments may have sprung from letters written by a religious sect that sells bleach it claims is a cure for the coronavirus, advising 5 drops mixed with water (DO NOt try this). The FDA recently slapped the product's makers with a court order banning their product. More on the court order here.

That the man with a desk in the Oval Office might take advice from a bleach peddler he's never met and whose product has been banned by the FDA is truly disturbing.

Were the bleach comments the beginning of the end of the road for Trump? I hope so. America is entitled to so much more than Donald Trump is capable of providing. He is tanking our global reputation and status.

But I think the only way that happens is if Trump starts losing support from the Republican base.  If McConnell/Republicans were to try anything when his support is anywhere near the 90-93% approval rating he has with Republicans, they'd only be shooting themselves in the foot.  Given how that support has remained pretty consistent despite all the moronic things he's said/done over the past 3 years, I'm not holding my breath.  OTOH, with the economy nosediving and unemployment skyrocketing, there might be some percentage of Republicans who are willing to face reality.  But I think that Republican approval number would have to drop to at least 75-80%.

McConnell told Fox News Radio that Americans would rather hear from scientists and public health officials like Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Deborah Birx.

"Well, certainly what the American people are most interested in is the advice from health professionals about how to conduct their daily lives safely," he said after being asked whether the president should curtail the events.

that dems are more likely to use things like face masks than pubs are.  On the other hand there seems to be real agreement from the medical pros that many of the masks in use are not effective in preventing the user from catching COVID-19.  The most common problem is the masks simply don't fit and allow unfiltered air to pass through the cracks.  Things like riding on a subway, buss, train, plane, or being in a crowded building are activities folks in a big city engage in much more often than someone living in a rural area.  I went to Walmart today and noticed folks who were older seemed to be wearing masks while the younger folks were not wearing them.  I have what I consider a high tec mask and also wear a hat with a see through sheet of plastic that goes from the brim of the hat to my chest; not to mention I try and observe social distancing.

Point is protection is one thing but exposure is another.  When I go shopping I not only wear protection but as soon as I get home I put stuff I bought in the laundry room spread out on the tops of the washer and dryer, mostly close the door to the kitchen, turn on the UVC light that also produces ozone, go upstairs, undress, and take a shower, then take my clothes (in a plastic bag) downstairs.  After 30 minutes of 60W UVC light I take the stuff off the washer and dryer and put it away and wash my clothes.  This happens a couple of times a week and the rest of the time I am not exposed to the virus since I am in my living room or taking my walk in the park next door.  Only seen people there once and did not come within 20 feet of them.  A lot of rural people may not have the same routine but do have the limited chance of exposure I do.  On the other hand many folks living in NYC, Washington DC, Miami, Houston, Detroit, or other big cities have many more chances to be exposed.

Look at the huge difference between LA and NY.  A big part of this is because what I call the car culture in LA where everyone drives alone in a car and is basically limiting their contact with others while in NYC you really have to take a train or buss to get around.

It may be more important to limit your chance of exposure than to do things like wearing a mask; something much easier to do in a rural area than in a crowded city.

about facemasks.  There seems to be widespread agreement that the huge majority of them do little or nothing to protect the person wearing it.  There may be some protection from spreading COVID-19 if you have it and wear one, but even that is limited.

When the pandemic first started I had several options.  One was a mask I first bought when there was a mold problem in my storage room and it was suppose to filter out viruses.  It was full face and had filters you could replace.  Also had several N97 one use masks I bought when doing fiberglass work inside the boat.  After a lot of research I broke out the sewing machine and made some masks using the 3M Filtrere procedure.  I ordered some halyard material and will be making some masks using it as soon as USPS delivers it, suppose to be tomorrow.  The UF med school seems to favor this option; but I am considering adding some 2500 Filtere.  The vid about the UF style mask also goes into detail about how to fit a mask and how if not done correctly the mask may well be close to useless.  One thing I have found is using tape on the edges of the mask makes a huge difference.  As the medical doctor in the UF vid points out since she has a small face and chin she has to use tape to get the mask to work correctly.

The UF halyard style mask also has the advantage of being able to be sterilized so it is not single use.  I am still of the belief that the best way to sterilize things is using UVC light with ozone.  Both the UVC wavelength and ozone are known to destroy all viruses; in fact they are dangerous to humans (and other living things).

So how many of you guys are using masks, what kinda masks, do you sterilize them and if so how.

    Comments welcome.

from spreading germs. Not to protect you.

I rarely leave the house. My wife goes to the Post Office (there is no mail delivery in my village), pharmacy and grocery store. She is using a pot leaf bandanna (bought in Amsterdam 20+ years ago) with hair ties to keep in on her ears. People seem to love the pot leaf bandanna and keep asking if she'll make them a mask.  The few times I have gone anywhere, I used the same bandanna setup.

Facemasks were commonplace when I lived in Japan in the early 70s. Asians have worn them for years. Back then you could by a pack of cotton gauze masks to cover your mouth at any train station snack kiosk. They are sold like small packs of kleenex. Japanese wore them on crowded trains to keep OTHERS from getting their germs if they coughed or something. Incredibly polite and thoughtful people. I miss Japan and regret that I never got to return.

My health (and now COVID-19) prevent me from visiting my sister in China.

Adding to growing evidence that the novel coronavirus can spread through air, scientists have identified genetic markers of the virus in airborne droplets, many with diameters smaller than one-ten-thousandth of an inch.
That had been previously demonstrated in laboratory experiments, but now Chinese scientists studying real-world conditions report that they captured tiny droplets containing the genetic markers of the virus from the air in two hospitals in Wuhan, China, where the outbreak started.
Their findings were published Monday in the journal Nature.

"Those are going to stay in the air floating around for at least two hours," said Linsey Marr, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Tech who was not involved with the Nature paper. "It strongly suggests that there is potential for airborne transmission."

not that N95s are not effective both to help protect the wearer and others, but due to their scarcity their general use is being discouraged so as to have enough masks for health care workers.

We await definitive studies on the effectiveness of surgical and other types of masks, starting with a better understanding of transmission such as by droplets and/or aerosol.  However, an absence of evidence in not necessarily evidence of absence.  In any event, masks are a part of the public heath strategy (I.e., social/physical distancing, washing hands, testing, tracing) to mitigate the sickness and death of this pandemic until a pharmaceutical treatment (e.g., anti-viral drugs, vaccines) become available.

by Donald from Hawaii on Tue Apr 28, 2020 at 08:36:51 PM EST
... require us to wear face masks out in public, with exceptions for those individuals who are exercising and or have pre-existing medical conditions such as asthma, which can make wearing a face mask somewhat problematic.

We wear ours every time we go out. We have cloth masks, which are washable in the laundry, but we started wearing disposable masks once I located a place where I could get them fairly easily, because they're actually much more comfortable. I bought a box (of 50 masks each) for each member of my family, and I have also sent a few boxes to our relatives and in-laws in California and Texas because they couldn't find any where they live.

I keep one mask in the glove compartment of my car in a sealed plastic sandwich bag. Technically, the masks are for single use by dental and medical professionals, but since I'm only using it for maybe 20 minutes at a time a couple of times a day, I've found that I can re-use it for about four days before having to change it out. That way, a box of 50 masks will probably last me through June.

The reason we wear face masks is to protect others, rather than to protect ourselves. If each of us do it and comply with social distancing specifications, that's how we will protect one another.

    Aloha.

to watch the vid from the med student at UF here is the Cliff's Notes summary.

The biggest problem with many masks, especially the home made fabric ones is it is not easy to breathe through them so people simply don't ware them or pull them down so they can breathe through their nose.

There are masks who's function is to protect others from the spread of the virus and masks to protect the wearer from catching the virus.  The bandanna style or many of the home made fabric or paper towel masks can reduce the chance a person with the virus (whether they know they have it or not) from spreading it; but it does not completely eliminate the risk unless the mask is completely sealed.  The masks designed to protect a person from being exposed to the virus are a whole different can of worms.

First thing a protective mask must do is be comfortable for the wearer to breathe or they simply remove it.  Next is the mask must have a very tight seal.  The girl in the vid noted that the only mask that did not fail the test required the use of tape to help achieve a good seal.  Interestingly I got a call from my dentist at the VA today about my cleaning and checkup being delayed.  In discussing masks he indicated my description of the test used by the girl at UF was the exact same test he went through when being trained in the use of protective masks.  This convinced me even more UF is on the right track.  Next the mask must be made of material that will not let the virus pass through it.

A secondary consideration of the protective mask design is can it be sterilized.  This means instead of needing a huge number of masks the wearer can get by with as few as half a dozen or so.  That is why I like the UF designed mask.  With a proper fit augmented by using tape the user can be protected from a virus being breathed in the wearers mouth or nose.  Depending on how long the wearer uses the mask (as a rule on a ten hour shift the mask is switched out after five hours.  At the end of the day both masks are sterilized and another set of masks is put into rotation for the next day.  If possible masks should not be reused for at least 24 hours, and the longer the better.

For under $US22 I bought enough halyard material to make 200 masks.  I view the thread used in the sewing machine as a few dollars at most.  I also wear a clear plastic face shield which reduces the chance of exposure even more.Even with marginal sewing skills making this style of mask should be trivial.

Bottom line is I don't think it is a good idea to rely on the actions of others to protect me from exposure to COVID-19.  Spending a few dollars and a few hours to make a supply of protective masks seems like a good idea to me.

Justin Amash Explores Bid for President

April 28, 2020 at 8:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 193 Comments

Rep. Justin Amash (I-MI) announced an exploratory committee to run for president on the Libertarian Party ticket.

Said Amash: "We're ready for a presidency that will restore respect for our Constitution and bring people together. I'm excited and honored to be taking these first steps toward serving Americans of every background as president."

Axios: "Amash gained notoriety last year when he came out as the lone House Republican to support the impeachment of President Trump following the publication of the Mueller report. He later switched his party affiliation to independent."

I think that will not happen.  One.

Two the fact is there will be "someplace else to go"

Of course there will.  There always is. The issue is who the candidates are and who would go to them.

Very few lefties are going to vote for Amash.  I just think that's silly.  OTOH quite a few might go to Ventura.

Good luck stopping the Nader, Stein, Ventura and Amash's of the world from running.    IMO it's one of the dumbest parts of our presidential elections.  What it has always meant is a president can be elected with 25% if it's more than anyone else.  IMO a system that's might let a crazy cult elect a president is f'ing nuts.

But it's the one we have.

So.  Amash is running.  I hope he is enough to balance out the idiots who would vote for Ventura.

All that said,  my belief is that this cycle there are far, far, more democrats who want to win than, say, last time.  I think the Green Party take will be small.  Whoever it is.  But a serious third party Republican, which he is, could do better.  Because, Trump.

That is my belief.  Like I said, who knows, we will see.

dems that would rather have another choice than Biden.  I will admit Biden is not the worst possible candidate the dems could have picked (Avenatti would have been worse) but of the realistic choices Biden is the worst.

My bigger point is to disagree with your implied claim that there are only dems and pubs.  In aggregate, 40% of all voters in party registration states are Democrats, 29% are Republicans, and 28% are independents.

Maybe more important is the increasing number of folks registering as I, mostly at the expense of the Ds.  As I have posted more than once it has been some time since prez elections were decided by votes for a candidate; rather they are decided by votes against a candidate.

There is not much question Trump squeaked out a big victory by winning a few key states by narrow margins while Clinton was running up big vote totals in states (like CA and NY) where she spent too much time fund raising instead of visiting states where Trump campaigned hard for his narrow wins.

Bottom line for me is that the key to winning the 2020 prez race will be winning a small number of voters in key states; and more to the point a lot of those voters will be the Is, not the Ds or Rs.

Josh Kraushaar: "Here's what I'm hearing from smart GOP strategists now: Republicans should be talking about their work to help their communities in the wake of the pandemic, and avoid referencing Trump's role in managing the crisis. To win battleground Senate seats that are looking more tenuous, it will be crucial to maintain support from some Trump-skeptical independents. If Trump's political condition doesn't improve by the fall, prepare to talk about keeping the Senate as a check against Democratic power, even if it means acknowledging the presidency is likely lost."

The Internal Poll That Shocked Trump World

May 3, 2020 at 8:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 119 Comments

Washington Post: "One of the polls, an internal RNC survey of voters in 17 battleground states, had former vice president Joe Biden leading Trump 48% to 45%, according to an adviser briefed on the 20-page polling memo. The coronavirus ranked as the most important issue to voters, and 54% of those surveyed said Trump was too slow to respond to the crisis, while 52% said they believed the government should be doing more."

"Worse still were the matchups with Biden on a range of core characteristics. Just 36% said they considered Trump more honest and trustworthy; 35% said he was more compassionate and empathetic; 44% said he was more competent; 43% said they believed he fights more for people like them; and 36% said he was more calm, steady and relatable."

haven't had the chance to speak with any tRumpies, but I suspect there is more than a bit of "It's all fun and games until people are dying" going on. Especially among the elderly.

However, I really have little faith that it will really stick, by November it will all be the fault of Biden, the Chinese and the Governors and tens of millions will believe it and the media will certainly both-sider it.

My brother doesn't really fit the Trumper profile with advanced education degrees.  But it's taking a toll.  And the thing is I think the wave of infections in places like this is just about to start.  And when it's over they are all going to know dead people.

I really think so.  This "re-opening" - to be clear, I get it.  I understand that businesses are dying and it's really inevitable - is very awkwardly timed.

People here have been pretty good about distancing and protection.  Because they are scared.  This whole re-opening thing is going to make them less scared.  So some - SOME many will not - but some will relax.

The problem is the virus has not really been here.  Only in the last couple of weeks one of the counties my village is in got it's first case.

    It's here now.

Just when things are about to relax, it's here.  I think it might not end well.

To your point, I really think Covid might cure Trump.

With 31 states reopening partially next week the numbers can't possibly turn for the better.  Sorry to sound pessimistic.

We're  still in good shape down here with only 80 cases for over 30,000 residents.  Luckily we are 125 miles long and since the roadblocks are still up through this month there are no crowds.  Without the gym I feel like I'm falling apart, working out at home just doesn't cut it either.  I do walk my cat down the street after dinner.  He loves it and hotfoots it along side me like a dog.  So that's the report from the fabulous Florida Keys.  Keep your heads down out there my friends.

I would go there 4-5 times a week for my water exercise classes and swimming.  (And sitting in the jacuzzi afterwards as a reward.)
With my arthritis, I can't do much on land (except chair yoga) and I miss the pool, which not only keeps my joints going but gives me aerobic exercise.

I really think for the true Trump Cultists, they won't care that their own are dying. This is about their identity, and if they have to die for their tribe they will. In the same way a MAGA will absolutely not change their mind about 2nd amendment, even as their own family members fall dead to guns, MAGAs will die to support Trump.
Because their white identity is all that matters to them.

There's a great book about this by Jon Metzl called
    Dying of Whiteness.

    Check it out.

But anyway, no I do not think that MAGAs dying will change any MAGA minds. This is about who they are.

Much like Confederate soldiers would willingly fight and  die during the Civil War to preserve white supremacy, this is a battle larger than themselves.

In many ways we're still fighting that same war.

having taken a medical leave from my junior year in college with a horrendous case of mononucleosis. Had been burning the candle at both ends, with being editor-in-chief of the college paper (which required two all-nighters a week), an antiwar activist, and trying to keep up as a philosophy major. Was just starting to feel better when Nixon again expanded The War with his bombing of Cambodia. Word of the shooting and killing of four kids my age by the Ohio National Guard forced me out of bed and back to campus, where we began organizing demonstrations and strikes with students all over the country. Ten days later, Jackson State. Yes, this was absolutely our 9/11.

Don't get me wrong the opposition to the war was serious and passionate, but we were young and it was springtime. The mass protests were exhilarating and at least partially celebratory, that day in May was a massive kick in the gut/reality check to say the least.

It's still worse today, where everyday seems like a kick in the gut.

I keep thinking beating Trump in the election is not the real problem. It's getting him out when he loses.  He won't leave willingly.
